Northern Cal PGA Nationwide Qualifier @ The Bridges Attracts 180 Golfers

The Northern Cal PGA Nationwide Qualifier for the TPC Stonebrae Classic will be held at The Bridges Golf Club in San Ramon on Monday, March 30.  The field is full with 180 players who all paid $350.  Many local mini-tour players and ‘wanna-be’ tour players will be giving their best attempts to qualify for the Nationwide tournament at TPC Stonebrae beginning April 2.

There’s been a lot of discussion about who will be on his game and what the low score will be.  All the hillsides will be out-of-bounds, making for many narrow tee-shots.  The golf staff thinks the low score will be around 66 or 67.

The PGA is looking for volunteers to help with the event.  They need spotters and cart drivers.  If you’re interested in volunteering contact The Bridges golf shop at (925) 735-4253.

Golf Maintenance Planned for East Bay Course

The Bridges Golf Club has schedule a fall top dressing of the greens October 27 and 28.  Rather than punching the greens for aerification purposes, the maintenance crew will be laying down sand on top of the greens.  The course will be closed Monday, October 27 and will re-open for play on Tuesday, October 28 at noon.  If the weather is ideal we should see the sand completely work its way into the greens in about two weeks.

Other maintenance projects this fall will be aerification of the fairways and rough between October 27 and November 20.

NCGA Re-Rates San Ramon Golf Course

Enjoying an afternoon at The Bridges Golf Club

Enjoying an afternoon at The Bridges Golf Club

The NCGA recently re-rated The Bridges Golf Club for the men’s tees only.  The following are the new slopes and ratings.

Black Tees:  74.5/147

Blue Tees:  73.4/141

White Tees:  71.1/139

Gold Tees:  68.9/134

For all but the gold tees the slope came down.  In addition, the ratings were slightly lower than the previous ratings.  The NCGA did not re-rate the ladies tees (green tees).  The rating and slope remains the same at 71.4/123.

Event given the slight decrease in the ratings, The Bridges is still a challenging track.  A golfer must really concentrate on course management when playing the course and needs to think about shots a couple strokes in advance.

Northern California Golf Course Receives Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Certification

Tim Youngberg, our Superintendent, is excited to have received certification in Environmental Planning from the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program or in shorter terms, the ACSP.  The plan was developed by Tim who was also recognized for environmental stewarship.

Tim’s plan and that of the ACSP is to develop effective conservation and wildlife enhancement programs for the benefit of the local community.  For  anyone who has played a round of golf at The Bridges,  you might see coyotes, red hawks, and other types of birds.

Some ways that The Bridges will enhance the habitat of wildlife is to place nesting boxes for birds, as well as conserve water and maintain food and cover for wildlife.

Recycled Water Helps Bay Area Golf Course Remain Green

View of 8 & 11

The Bridges Golf Club has been using recycled or reclaimed water from the San Ramon Valley Recycled Water Program for more than a year now. Early on I was very leery about using this water as it was heavy in certain nitrates. Our entire chemical application process changed in order to adapt to the recycled water.

But I am pleased to say the end result has made us a satisfied customer and a greener customer in every sense of the word.

I know we have a “distinguished” reputation in the Bay Area and keeping our turf in prime condition is the most important. The higher amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the recylced water keeps the turf healthier. The stresses from hot weather and wind are also less significant with recycled water than with potable water. I find that we don’t need to fertilize as often.

Bay Area Golfer Wins Gateway Tour Event

Carlos Corona who use to work at The Bridges Golf Club won his first professional golf tournament on the Gateway Tour at Estrella Country Club in Arizona last month.

Carlos beat Charlie Beljan in sudden-death with rounds of 67/70/63. The win opens up the door for Carlos to Monday qualify for several events on the Nationwide Tour.

Carlos was once an employee of The Bridges Golf Club and worked in the Golf Shop and Practice Center. Carlos now works solely on his game hoping to make it onto the Nationwide Tour and eventually the PGA Tour. Joey Pickavance of Systemgolf is Carlos’ golf instructor and is extremely pleased to see him playing so well. Joey works with Carlos at The Bridges on a regular basis when Carlos is in town.
